Fresh space for the sciences

KSU Stark Campus’s new science and nursing building expands opportunities for teaching and student research, along with study and collaboration. Here, students will learn in classrooms and labs for biology, physics, geology, and nursing (with simulation labs). They’ll also be able to work in computer labs and a student cyber lounge. In the adjacent Main Hall East Wing, KSU also converted existing biology labs for the chemistry program.

The building features open spaces and lots of daylight. Its energy-efficient design earned LEED Gold certification, with a projected 32.7% energy consumption savings. Classrooms and labs, for example, have energy-efficient lighting integrated with vacancy sensing and daylight harvesting equipment. High-efficiency HVAC equipment conditions the building while reducing energy use. Other sustainable design features include a green roof, bioretention, and a rain garden.
