Karpinski Engineering provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, technology (MEPT ), and security design services for a 19,000 SF new Tier III+ data center for Motorists Mutual Insurance in New Albany, Ohio. In addition to the 19,000 SF, 3,400 SF is 36” raised floor, with expansion capabilities to double the area. The raised floor space is conditioned with Liebert glycool economizer DX to glycol CRAC units with variable speed pumps and economizer free cooling controlled dry cooler. In addition, there are traditional pressurized floors with ducted ceiling returns maximizing unit efficiencies. Office and support spaces were also conditioned with DX to glycol AHU’s with economizer outside air. Our team directed extensive design meetings with the owner’s staff, focusing on load projections, existing operations, site determinations, and reliability projections.
A design complexity was the requirement to withstand a direct hit from an F3 tornado. This challenged the design team to locate equipment interior to the structure and behind protective cover, as well as hiding utility services in recessed bunkers. Electrical design of the data center included 2.5 MVA Capacity, 3 MW Generation, 750 KVA UPS systems capacity in 2 (N+1) redundancy configuration, VESDA smoke detection, and CCTV security and card access system. Four (4) 750 KW generators operating in parallel, closed transition to utility serve emergency power needs of the entire facility.
Motorists Data Center technology included structured cable system design including requirements for the administrative work areas and stations, structured cable system design including requirements for the CCTV camera and access control security systems, administrative technology equipment room layout and rack elevation, technology grounding system to administrative technology room, audio/visual system rough-in and construction drawings and specifications. This project was constructed in nine months and included full commissioning of the project.
