Project Description

Karpinski Engineering provided MEPT design for Cleveland Clinic’s Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Institute (PLMI). LEED-Gold certified, the 130,000-SF, $72-million facility processes more than 50,000 lab specimens per day (20 million annually) for microbiology, special chemistry, immunopathology, and molecular pathology testing for hospitals across the United States and internationally. The design team utilized Building Information Modeling (BIM) and incorporated staff suggestions into the design. Each lab space is equipped with LED fixtures managed through low-voltage lighting and time-clock controls – derived from an ideal lab-bench layout to increase efficiency and flexibility.

Engineering systems are centralized in a penthouse, and lab gases are routed from the penthouse into two loops – allowing for six individual zones of operation. Each aisle is coordinated to accommodate three aisles per column bay – each with a utility chase where water, gas, vacuum, power, and data can be obtained. Utilities are located in the ceiling and can easily be adapted for alternative layouts.

Mechanical systems provide a 40% energy savings – more than ASHRAE 990.1-2004 benchmark standards. This facility has 100% outside-air handlers and uses heat recovered from general exhaust to pre-heat or pre-cool incoming air. Fast-acting, variable-air-volume (VAV) fume hood exhaust systems are in critical rooms less than 2,000 SF, and a standard VAV system provides for open laboratory spaces. A dedicated duct system is routed from each hood to the manifold exhaust fan on the roof, utilizing a constant-velocity fan stack. The VAV exhaust fan has an adjustable cone, and stand-alone hoods have dedicated fans. Chilled water is produced on-site, using two 300-ton, water-cooled screw chillers piped in series and in a counter flow arrangement. A 35-ton, water-cooled process chiller with a heat-recovery heat exchanger provides pre-heat to the boiler system. A secondary condenser is piped to a drycooler, in the event that a heating load on the system is not available.

Plumbing equipment includes a deionized water system, domestic water heaters, compressed air for laboratory and air-handler humidification systems, and laboratory gas with a 2x2 manifold for N2 and CO2.

Emergency power is fed from a substation with an emergency power back-up system. A central uninterruptible power supply (UPS) with two power distribution units (PDUs) provides battery back-up power for technology systems. Electrical service is supplied from the Cleveland Clinic campus electrical substation. Two medium-voltage feeders provide power to the building via circuit breaker main-tie-main, metal-clad switchgear with an auto throw-over scheme. The low-voltage switchgear feeds switchboards and automatic transfer switches. Additional transformers and electrical distribution provide 208/1200-V, three-phase, four-wire power for receptacles and small equipment loads.
