Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center Topping-Off Ceremony
June 22 was a significant day for both the City of Cleveland and the project team responsible for design and construction of the
Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center. Spectators observed the final 515th concrete façade panel being hoisted into the air and placed on top of the four-story building during the traditional “topping-off” ceremony.
The Medical Mart & Convention Center is one of the largest construction projects in Cleveland –
drawing local and national attention to the City and its high concentration of medical institutions and biomedical companies. The new facility totals nearly one-million-SF and includes a 235,000-SF medical mart to house permanent showrooms, an adjoining 230,000-SF Class A exhibition area, and approximately 90,000-SF in meeting spaces – including a conference center and ballroom.
The Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center has been designed to achieve LEED Silver certification. Sustainable design measures include a green roof, daylighting, and steam condensate recovery for preheating the snow melt system. Additionally, more than 98% of demolition and construction materials leaving the site have been recycled.
Karpinski Engineering provided MEP/T and fire protection design services, and has completed a fire protection evaluation for the entire facility. Scheduled to open in the summer of 2013, the project is within budget and is currently two months ahead of schedule. Total project cost is $465 million.
