LEED Gold for Orrville High School Addition

Congratulations to Orrville High School, whose new addition has achieved LEED Gold Certification.
The facility, which opened in 2013, provides students with new academic spaces – along with a cafeteria and gym – and replaces outdated facilities. The new addition connects to the existing auditorium and gym, which the school district retained.
Orrville High School’s addition is one of 75+ Ohio schools to have earned LEED Gold.

Why it works: The engineering design included a geothermal system for building heating and cooling, which the school system chose for long-term energy savings. It also incorporated low-flow plumbing fixtures for water savings. In addition to Karpinski Engineering’s MEP contributions, many other design elements helped the addition earning LEED Gold status. They include storm water quality control, water efficient landscaping, outside views for more than 90% of the spaces in the building, and waste diversion of 93% of the waste generated onsite from construction.

LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) is a program of the U.S. Green Building Council that promotes sustainable building design. Through the LEED program, buildings are evaluated on measures such as energy-efficient building systems, water efficiency, sustainable site strategies, and sustainable building materials. A building can be awarded one of four certification levels: Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum (the highest).
