Sustainability Starts at Home - Karpinski Engineering’s recently completed corporate headquarters renovation has been awarded LEED Certification by the United States Green Building Council. Our offices in the Midtown Professional Center in the Midtown Corridor section of Downtown Cleveland recently underwent a major renovation. Our investment was made to consolidate the offices, to give the space a fresh look, to open the floor plan to increase interaction, and most importantly, to achieve LEED certification.

Now that goal has officially been achieved. This recognition reinforces KE’s goal of providing the highest quality LEED & Sustainable design services for our clients by being sustainable ourselves. We put our money where our mouth is! Not only are our offices LEED Certified, but we have 16 LEED Accredited Professionals on staff with the goal of having all of our technical staff accredited.

Combine these goals and accomplishments with KE”s experience with numerous LEED projects and you’ll find a Consulting Engineering firm ready and willing to lead our industry to a brighter & greener future.

Civil Engineering - In our continuing effort to provide the most comprehensive and highest quality services to our clients, Karpinski Engineering has expanded our services to include Civil Engineering. Offering these services to our clients in both the public and private sectors provides the vital groundwork for site planning, design, and development as well as addressing the unique challenges that each site offers.

Karpinski Engineering has a long history of working with clients to build projects from the ground up. Now, not only are we setting our sights to incorporate below grade construction but we are raising to new heights the level of engineering services we can provide. If you have any question of would like additional information about KE’s Civil Engineering Services feel free to contact Dennis Wessel or contact our Civil Department Manager, William Dunagan.

KE Staff Advancements - Karpinski Engineering would like to recognize the following employees for recent awards or professional advancements:

LEED 3.0 - LEED 2009 was rolled out by the USGBC in late March, 2009 and went into effect in June of this year. LEED 2009 is also referred to as LEED version 3.0. In general, the new version realigns and adjusts the point values of many of the credits. An innovation that is incorporated into LEED 2009 is the creation of identical point scales between the various LEED rating systems. For example, the previous LEED-NC and LEED-EB rating systems require minimum scores of 33 and 40 points respectively to achieve a silver rating. With LEED 2009, all the various rating systems require a score of 50 points for a silver rating. This minimizes confusion between the rating systems.

The adjustment of point values adds weight to credits that require a more significant commitment from the owner than other credits. The available points for energy performance increased from 14% of the total possible points in the current LEED-NC to 17% in LEED-NC 2009.

The current version of LEED included 68 out of 110 possible points which are directly or indirectly within the purvue of Karpinski Engineering’s design capabilities. What better reason is there to retain the services of KE for the provision of LEED services?

New ASHRAE Guideline - Dennis Wessel, Senior Vice President is one of a team of ten technical experts currently developing the latest ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guide. The next in this series is the guide for Small Healthcare Facilities. ASHRAE, working in conjunction with the USDOE, USGBC, AIA, Illuminating Engineering Society and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory is developing this guide to provide an approach to reducing energy consumption of 90,000 square foot and smaller healthcare facilities by 30% over the requirements of ASHRAE Standard 90.1. The previous guides for Small Office Buildings, Warehouses, Small Retail Facilities and Highway Lodging are available for free download at http://http://www.ashrae.org/technology/page/938 and over 200,000 copies are in circulation. Compliance with the requirements of these guides is also acceptable by the USGBC for points toward the LEED Certification process.

Upon the completion of the Healthcare AEDG, currently scheduled for November 2009, it will also be made available for free download. Please contact Dennis if you are interested in being advised when this guide is available.
