Projects of Note:

Marymount Opens New Doors in March 2012

In March 2012, Marymount Hospital will open its new Surgery Center addition with the renovations scheduled to open in first quarter of 2013. The new 45,000 SF surgery center and renovation of  30,000 SF of existing clinical space has a total project cost of $45 Million. The Cleveland Clinic wanted to utilize a project delivery method that aligned the construction team with the owners’ mission, reduced cost, maintained a construction schedule, produced better project outcomes and reduced risk.

The process developed included the use of some Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) concepts and the hiring of five contractors during the design phase to assist in constructability, scheduling, cost estimating and design reviews. Karpinski Engineering was a proud member of this design team. Early integration of the Owner/Design/Construction team provided valuable insight for the design team and gave indispensable design knowledge and history to the construction team. These collaborative efforts have considerably reduced the number of RFI’s and other issues during construction. The result has been a project in which all parties are working toward common goals and are accountable to the rest of the team. This has led to a TEAM that has delivered a project to the owner that is on time and on budget, has strengthened team relationships and made the design/build process enjoyable. Building Information Modeling (BIM)

Emy McGann, BIM Manager
Over the past four years Karpinski Engineering has focused on producing and delivering quality Building Information Models (BIM). We initially adopted BIM utilizing AutoCAD MEP and Navisworks technology. After several successful projects, highlighted by a large design-assist medical building, inspired us to strengthen our trade by adopting the Revit MEP platform. Applying both Revit MEP and Navisworks has allowed us to better collaborate with all fields of the building industry.

We currently have a wide range of Revit MEP projects varying in size from under 25,000 sq. ft. to over 600,000 sq. ft. We continue to fine-tune our software skill set through continuous training (using our new training lab), research and development, and constant evaluation of our standards and procedures.

An Update on

The Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center

Known as one of the largest construction projects in Cleveland's history, the Cleveland Medical Mart and Convention Center is moving along. In addition to welcoming the new year, we also welcome the second year of construction for the new Cleveland Convention Center and Medical Mart, one of the largest projects we have designed at KE.  Although it still may appear as a big hole in the ground, progress at the site has been remarkable.  Besides the old Convention Center and parking garage, five additional buildings were demolished to make room.  Portions of the new facility are already enclosed.  Conduit, piping, ductwork and HVAC equipment are being installed.  KE staff has had significant effort in the construction administration process and we continue to keep pace with design revisions as they are approved.   For additional information, visit the project website at: http://www.clevelandmedicalmart.com

The Ohio State University

Medical Center Expansion Project
How Karpinski Engineering Fits

The Ohio State University Expansion Project is the largest project at the Ohio State University with the construction cost of approximately $1.1 billion. There are four pieces to the expansion project; new James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute and the Critical Care Tower (the largest piece), University Hospital (Rhodes and Doan Hall) and James Cancer Hospital (RDJ) MEP Infrastructure Upgrades, Medical Campus Roadways and Infrastructure, and the South Campus Chiller Plant.

Our team of professionals were hired directly by The Ohio State University in 2008 to perform upgrades to the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems in Rhodes Hall, Doan Hall and the current James Cancer Hospital. Our responsibilities include replacing main air handling systems and installing chilled water from the South Campus Chiller Plant to Rhodes, Doan and James and the Ross Heart Hospital. These new systems will extend the serviceable life and improve energy efficiency of the buildings for continuous use and support of the Medical Center Master Plan. Construction of the MEP Infrastructure Upgrades is expected to conclude in 2013.

We are proud to be part of a project that will improve the availability and quality of health care in Central Ohio. To read more on the progress of the new Medical Center expansion and the quality health care at the Ohio State University Medical Center, http://projectoneblog.osumc.edu/ .
